View Full Version : Do Children really need supplements?
Do children really benefit from vitamin supplements? Can’t I make sure they get the vitamins and minerals they need from meals?

"Even the most nutritionally vigilant parent cannot be 100% certain what nutrients are in the food they serve their children. That’s because there’s so much variability in the food we prepare. For instance, fat-soluble vitamins can withstand normal cooking, but vitamins A and E are gradually destroyed by exposure to air. Water-soluble vitamins such as B1, B6, folic acid, and pantothenic acid are destroyed by heat. Vitamin B2 is destroyed by light and heat, while light and air destroy vitamin C.
Certain food preservatives and preparation methods also destroy the vitamins in food. To further complicate matters, some fruit and vegetables are grown and harvested in such a way that does not promote nutrient content – so even raw foods may be lacking.
Then there are those crazy food phases all children seemingly go through. While these phases are generally harmless in the long run, a recent alarming exception was in the news.
A five-year old boy ate nothing but cheese pizza, Pop-Tarts, biscuits, and water, refusing fruits, vegetables, juices and vitamins. He slowly developed a limp, swollen gums, and small purple spots appeared on his skin. After five months of this extremely deficient diet, he was unable to walk or get out of bed because the pain was so severe. Doctors diagnosed the boy as having a severe vitamin C deficiency after ruling out other ailments such as leukemia.
Within a week of getting vitamin C supplements, the boy’s pain and other symptoms were completely resolved. Obviously, this little boy’s story is unusual. However, even mild food phases (such as “If It’s Green It Must Be Yucky” or “The Only Good Crust Is A Cut- Off Crust”) can result in awfully lop-sided nutrition."
So yes, Vitamin supplements can be very important to a child's health.

There are certainly some fallacies about vitamin supplements out there. One of the biggest fallacies about vitamin supplements is that they are a cure all for every condition and every disease. There is no one vitamin pill, nutritional supplement or combination of vitamin supplements that will protect the consumer against every disease and provide optimum health. Another big fallacy about vitamin supplements is that they can make up for a poor diet. Nothing could be further from the truth. Proper nutrition, both for young people and adults, always has been and always will be the cornerstone of health and well being. Vitamin supplements may be able to provide a much needed boost to health, but they are not intended to be, and should not be used as, a replacement for a well rounded diet.

Hi...

The question of "Do children need vitamin supplements" has been a hard one to answer. As with adults, studies of the safety and effectiveness of vitamin supplements have been somewhat inconclusive. While one study may show a clear benefit among those taking a particular kind of vitamin supplement, another study may show no benefit. With all this contradictory evidence, it is often difficult to find out what really works and what type of vitamin supplement your child may really need.....

In this day and age of fast food it is so important for children to get supplements because 9 time out of 10 times they are not going to eat the proper food, that along with the minerals being so depleated from the soil they must take a mineral supplement.

Very important.
Children need to grow - as such some consider it even more important for children to get vitamins than it is for a fully grown adult. You just have to make sure you are being very watchful, because although it is easiest to get them to take 'fun' vitamins, like gummies...sometimes that causes a problem. Just the other day I saw a woman who's child was excited to get her gummy vitamins...if they see them as candy, they may try to sneak more than they need - which can be very harmful, especially if the vitamin contains Iron.
Also, be watchful of the Vitamin A - make sure it's from Beta Carotene and not Retinal or Palmitate (which are essentially the same thing).
Very good question, though. I suppose it will make a good topic to go more into detail with @ my blog.

I agree that it would be great to get nutrition from the food but I read a report years ago from the government stating that most of the soil was depleated of the minerals that used to be there, do to not rotateing and taking care of the soil, so we try to do the best for our families by giving them vegetables etc. but the minerals are no longer there like they were in the olden days, that's why it's almost impossible to get the children and adults the nutrition they need, another reason one must supplement their diet, incidently the report I read was a report that the government put out in 1936, saying the soil was depleated, and that is 72 years ago, so imagine what it is like now, we cannot get all we need anymore without supplementing, so the situation is we need to try our best with the food and also the right nutritionals.

Look at the average child's diet and tell me with a straight face that you think they are getting proper nutrition!!!!
Between the hot dogs and baloney, twinkies, hohos and ding dongs, cheetos, freetos and tostitos, pop tarts and sugary cereals, juice boxes, soda pop and sport drinks - we are setting our kids up for obesity and diabetes among many other health problems.
Tell me how anyone thinks that they are getting a balanced diet with all these sugary, carb loaded processed foods??
Everyone needs to focus on getting a good supply of raw fruits and veggies - organic if you can. I vitamix instead of juice to make sure I get all the good stuff - including fiber (and all the great extra vitamins and minserals in the pulp that other juice companies tell you is worthless.
Even so - its not enough - I know it, my body knows it. I still suppliment - because it is really hard to eat enough good food.
Beyond vitamins - you need enzymes (killed in pateuization processes), you need good bacteria - probiotics (also killed during the pasteurization process), you need minerals etc.
Its not about loading up on crap you don't need becasue you are scared - its about taking control of your health - finding what your body needs and making sure you get it. Loving parents do the same for their kids.
Proper nutrition can help us avoid many ailments. Good luck on your search for nutritional wisedom!

If your child eats enough food and vegetable, you shouldn't worry, but as everybody says this is a age of fast food( :(),
In this day and age of fast food
so in this case only vitamin supplements can help our children to be healthy. :)
