The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens, or infectious agents that comprises of the body's defense system against diseases. The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. However, sometimes problems with the immune system can lead to illnesses and infections.
There are many causes that weaken our immune system:

1. Overdosing on sugar:
Intake of high amounts of sugar for a prolonged period of time can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40 percent. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five hours.

2. Excessive alcohol drinking
Excessive alcohol drinking can harm the body's immune system in two ways
a) It produces an overall nutritional deficiency, depriving the body of valuable nutrients.
b) Excessive alcohol drinking can reduce the ability of white cells to kill germs, and suppress the ability of the white blood cells to multiply causing intoxication resulting in suppressed immunity and liver infection.

3. Food allergens
The immune system recognizes an otherwise harmless substance as a foreign invader and attacks it, causing an allergic reaction. Before the battle, the intestinal lining was like a wall impenetrable to foreign invaders. After many encounters with food allergens, the wall is damaged, enabling invaders and other potentially toxic substances in the food to get into the bloodstream and make the body feel fatigued.

4. Intake high amounts of saturated and trans fats
Obesity can lead to a weakened immune system. It can affect the ability of white blood cells to multiply, produce antibodies, and prevent inflammation.

5. Inadequate amount of sleep
An inadequate amount of sleep can lead to a depressed immune system. Our body requires sleep to restore it's depleted energy during sleeping and allows white blood cells to re- strengthen themselves.

6. Vitamin, nutrition and mineral deficiency
Vitamin, nutrition and mineral deficiency reduce the oxygen levels in the bloodstream which are essential to our body's cells and increases the risk of inflammation of the prostate, liver, etc.

There are many more factors such as emotional stress, physical stress, inadequate protein calorie, and age.

Here are some tips to prevent weak immune system: Get plenty of sleep and rest, the body rejuvenates and strengthens when it is at rest. Cut down worry and learn to de-stress, there are studies that prove that stress and depression effect the body physically and can even weaken the immune system. Eat a well balanced diet, don't skip meals. The four food groups have everything our bodies need to thrive. Learn the vitamins in your food and get a good dose of each one. :D

I have found it is important to take the right supplement to help with our health, since the minerals are depleated from the soil, one needs an ionic mineral supplement and a good antioxidant, along with the right calcium.

There are a lot of causes for weakened immune system, but you have a lot of options for strengthening your immunity naturally. Everyone knows that Vitamin C is good for the immune system, but you should also consider trying beta glucan (http://www.greenpathsupplements.com/beta-glucan). It naturally increases immunity and lowers cholesterol.

I thought that your post was going to be the question only, and I was getting all geared up to let out streams and streams of my thoughts about the subject.
But.
Anyway, thank you for the information.
It's always good to know what someone else thinks as well.

I attribute my weakened immune system to my poor eating habits. I eat a lot of junk. I started taking health supplements and now I hardly ever get colds.

To strengthen my immune system, I'm taking sodium ascorbate. At least 2 capsules a day is enough for me but

To strengthen my immune system I take a lot of garlic (good for a lot of different issues) in tablet and powder form on food, great stuff. I also use a half teaspoon of cinnamon per piece of toast daily, to help control my diabetes (type II) then cover the cinnamon with peanut butter and sometimes fruit jam. Seems to be working for me.

I used to get sick all the time and the cold would last for at least two weeks. To boost my immunity, I:

Started taking supplements like Vitamin C, Chlorophyll, etc.
Wash my hands frequently when I knew someone had a cold
Get extra sleep when I am sick. This is often overlooked and is so important!
Change my eating habits when sick. This means no sugar for 2-3 days. I eat chicken noodle soup, eat veggies, take cough medicine (Theraflu, Airbornne, etc) and take Vitamin C pills.

Now, I can get over a cold in 3-4 days (if I stay away from the sugar)

My asthma weakens my immune system. If I don't take my medicines, I tend to get colds and allergies more often. I also drink plenty of orange juice and eat a balanced diet to keep my immune system healthy.
